Adam began training in Wado Ryu karate under Sensei Rick Savagian in 1992, while a student at Mountain Pointe High School. Adam always saw karate as a way of life, as something that would inform all of his other activities, both physical and mental. Adam competed in tournaments throughout the US, and in Japan. Since leaving Arizona, he's kept up his Wado training in Florida, Denmark, Japan, and the Netherlands.
Adam earned his Ph.D. in philosophy, and his research focuses on topics related to death and immortality. He taught for a year at Northern Arizona University, but is currently a professor at Leiden University in the Netherlands. He enjoys teaching classes on Asian traditions, including one on the philosophy of the samurai.
